As I mentioned before, Merle's full name was Cecilia Merle Bowen. I wish I knew why she was always known by her middle name, Merle. It's the lost tidbits like this one that inspire me to collect the pictures, memorabilia and of course, the stories behind the people that are my ancestors. Here are a few pictures of Merle in Saskatchewan, where she was born. I'm still working on her two possible birth places, Prince Albert and Turtleford, so my next step is to try and locate her birth or baptism certificate.
When I look at these pictures, particularly the one where she's holding the water hose, I can see the woman she became. In that picture, she looks the same as she did when she was in her sixties, with filled-out cheeks and a mischievious grin!
Merle was an only child until she was 3 1/2.
