(I haven't figured out how to do tables in Blogger yet, so each / represents where a column ends)

Patrick and Mary had a total of 10 children, and by the 1881 census they had already lost two – Thomas in 1865 at the age of 5 by drowning and Patrick in 1875, possibly by drowning as well. Two years after this census was taken, they lost one more son as a young child – Michael.

You’ll notice that there is a Thomas and Patrick on the listing above. Mary was pregnant when her first son died and the new arrival was named after his dead brother. 10 years later, the same thing happened when the first Patrick died. This may have been part of Irish naming traditions.

According to some genealogy websites (http://www.cmcrp.net/ and http://www.rootsweb.com/), the Irish had a tradition of naming their children after family members in a certain pattern. Variations of the names may be used as well.

Birth Order/ SON NAMED AFTER/ DAUGHTER NAMED AFTER
First/ Father’s father/Mother’s mother
Second/Mother’s father/Father’s mother
Third/ Father/Mother
Fourth/Father’s oldest brother/Mother’s oldest sister
Fifth/Mother’s oldest brother/Father’s oldest sister

Patrick’s fourth son (third with a unique name) is named after his father, so it is possible they followed the tradition. If we apply it to the Meagher family (excluding the children named after their deceased siblings), we might assume the following (with caution):
· Patrick’s parents’ names were Thomas and Mary or Mary Ellen Meagher.
· Mary’s parents’ names were John or John J. and Rose Ann, Rosann or Rose Meagher.
· Patrick’s oldest brother is possibly named Henry or Harry, and his second brother may have been William. Patrick Mary’s oldest brother may have been named Michael.
According to Gladys Cook, a Meagher cousin, Patrick may also have had brothers named Dennis and James or Jim. These are all leads we can use to trace this line.
